Gigi (1958)
Gigi (1958)
Gigi (Leslie Caron) is a bright teenage tomboy living in Paris at the century's turn and highly resistant to the notion, insisted upon by her grandmother and great-aunt, that she should grow up. Particularly is she resistant to their intention that she should learn all the graces and qualities of a lady so that she may become an accomplished courtesan. The idea of love repels her.

Gaston (Louis Jourdan) is a restless Parisian playboy who moves from one mistress to another, but spends much time with his younger, precocious friend Gigi. The platonic relationship between Gaston and Gigi changes, however, when she matures, but the possibility of something lasting seems unlikely since he won't commit to one woman. Gigi refuses to be anyone's mistress, however, and Gaston must choose between her and his carefree lifestyle.

Exquisitely filmed, perfectly cast, and featuring the with the memorable Lerner & Loewe score that includes "Thank Heaven for Little Girls,'' Gigi proves to be a charming romantic comedy that continues to delight audiences.

Gigi is the winner of nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Writing (Alan Jay Lerner), Cinematography (Joseph Ruttenberg), Costumes (Cecil Beaton), Song ("Gigi''), and Scoring (Andre Previn).
