The Independence Fund, a nonprofit based in North Carolina, is committed to empowering the nation’s catastrophically wounded, injured, or ill Veterans to overcome physical, mental, and emotional wounds incurred in the line of duty. Their Mobility Program provides catastrophically wounded Veterans the chance to get back outside so that they can enjoy the outdoors through a variety of devices that include all-terrain wheelchairs and adaptive bicycles. An all-terrain wheelchair will be presented to Julius Schram, an Army Veteran, on stage prior to the screening of the film. Schram says, “I was deployed in 1986 and was injured. After 51 surgeries over a 14-year period, due to joint MRSA, and organ reconstruction. They amputated my right leg due to sepsis.”
“All active and retired military personnel receive the buy-one-get-one-free deal on the $5 tickets to this event. We invite all of our local Veterans to join us for this special holiday celebration and to be there for Julius when the Independence Fund presents his all-terrain chair,” says McKenna Friend-Hoffman, Patron Relations Manager at the Fox.
Christy Wood, a Tulare County woman who single-handedly raised the funds for the Independence Fund’s chair, says, “I was motivated by a news program that discussed the Independence Fund’s all-terrain wheelchair and the joy it brought to a veteran in need. It took me 4 years to raise the $15,000 by holding yard sales, a car wash, a silent auction and asking service clubs or individuals to donate for the wheelchair.”
The pre-show programming fits in perfectly with the plot of the chosen film, White Christmas. A story about entertainers Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) who join sister act Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen) to perform a Christmas show in rural Vermont. There, they run into General Waverly (Dean Jagger), the boys' commander in World War II, who is having financial difficulties. The foursome plan a Christmas miracle: a musical extravaganza to support General Waverly.
